Alben Barkley was the first Kentuckian to lead his party in the Senate. Between 1937 - 1949 Barkley served both as Majority Leader and for a short time Minority Leader. He was elected Vice President under President Harry Truman. During his long career, Barkley always kept Kentucky's best interests in mind and left a lasting legacy in the Commonwealth. He consistently demonstrated true leadership and the values which make him a Kentucky Hero.
